None of us go through life without experiencing adversity. Although it often varies what kind of adversity comes our way, the way we think determines whether we keep our heads above water or whether circumstances in life get us down.
A positive attitude is the key to a successful life, and when we don’t always succeed in keeping it, it’s because we’re not always aware that there are things we can do ourselves to keep our attitude during the hard times.
Here are five tools for keeping a positive attitude in adversity:
1. Take time to go for a walk
To the untrained eye and ear, this may seem a crazy piece of advice, but when you take a walk and give yourself time to think and breathe the fresh air out in nature, it can often work wonders. You get away from the daily grind and your responsibilities, and you get a chance to feel who you are and what is truly important to you. When you do this, you will discover that there are many ways to look at adversity. It’s not all bad, as it is often an opportunity to learn some new things, just as it gives us the opportunity to see life from a different perspective. When you do this, keeping that positive attitude despite adversity gets easier.
2. Focus on your goal
One of the greatest challenges in adversity is the fact that it shifts your focus. When your focus is on what causes the hard times, it can often feel like it sucks all the air out of the room, but life is much more nuanced than that. There are both good things and bad things. Therefore, you might want to sit down and write down your goal for the immediate future while thinking about how to reach it. When you do this, it will change your attitude.
3. Focus on solutions
We live in a country with far too much focus on what can go wrong instead of focusing on what is going well. Unfortunately, this means that far too many people focus on problems rather than opportunities and solutions. Instead of talking about your hard times, start talking about the available solutions. Stop asking why you have adversity, and start thinking about how you can change hard times to good times. When
you do this, keeping a positive attitude becomes easier.
4. Be inspired
When you are focused on the hard times you are facing, the mind tends to look for examples of things that can confirm it’s all a bunch of hooey. However, you have the opportunity to change your focus by doing things like talking to a good friend who can cheer you up. You can also read a book or listen to an inspiring audio book about people who have succeeded. This will make a BIG difference in the way you think when you have adversity.
5. Remind yourself that nothing lasts forever
Nothing lasts forever, and at some point, the circumstances in your life will change so things go your way again. When you remind yourself of this, you ignite a hope in yourself. A hope that slowly but surely will change your attitude.
